- No Warning was given to the people of Nepal
- The Indian and Eurasian plates pushed together by 20mm
- The plates moved suddenly - a century of built up strain was released
- The crust moved 3 meters in some places
- Primary Consequences
- Over 180 buildings were reduced to rubble in Kathmandu
- 19009 people were injured
- 8635 people were killed
- Landslides in the mountains buried houses and cut off roads
- Aftershocks threatened to destroy weakened buildings
- Secondary Consequenses
- Thousands of homeless people had to sleep outside.
- Schools, health facilities and government offices had to close
- $10 billion of damage was caused
- People in Kathmandu struggled to return to their families in rural areas.
- Remote areas were hard to get to due to landslides blocking the roads
- Responses
- Emergency aid
- NGOs such as the Red Cross and Oxfam helped to support the injured and homeless
- India was in prim position to provide emergency aid.
