Multi-Store Model Of Memory

?
View mindmap
  • Coding-the process of changing information from the environment to store it in memory.
    • Variables describing the stores the information passes through
      • Duration-the time period that information is held in its stores.
      • Capacity-the amount of information that can be stored.
  • Duration-20 seconds(between 18 and 30 seconds)- Peterson (1959).
    • Short-term Memory
      • Capacity- 7 +/- 2 items but can be improved by chunking -Miller (1956).
      • Coding- stored acoustically ,in the form of sound- Baddeley (1966)
      • Retrieval -information is passed back from LTM.
      • Acoustic coding is better than visual coding.
      • Elaborative rehearsal-linking to information already in LTM.
      • Information is lost via displacement (new info) or decay(over time).
      • Receives information from sensory register by paying attention.
  • Maintenance rehearsal-repeating the information.
  • Coding-semantically in the form of meaning.
    • Long-Term Memory
      • Implicit(Non-Declarative)- episodic & semantic memories.
      • Explicit(Declarative)-procedural memories.
        • Duration-potentially unlimited as prompts & recall exist.
      • Capacity-no limit has been found yet.
      • Continuous storage of information.
