  • Multi-Store Model of Memory (MSM)
    • SENSORY REGISTER - all senses but mainly Iconic and Echoic. DURATION = less than 1/2 second. CAPACITY = extremely high.   CODED = visually and acoustically.
    • SHORT-TERM MEMORY (STM) - DURATION = 30 seconds unless rehearsed. CAPACITY = 7 (+/-2) items. CODED = acoustically.
    • LONG-TERM MEMORY (LTM) - DURATION = potentially permanent. CAPACITY = unlimited. CODED = semantically.
    • PROLONGED REHEARSAL = STM into LTM. MAINTENANCE REHEARSAL = keeps it in the STM
    • SUPPORTING RESEARCH - Baddeley (1966) found that we mix up words that sound similar when using our STM but mix up words with similar meaning with our LTM. Supports coding.
    • MORE THAN ONE TYPE OF STM - Shallice & Warrington (1970) studied a patient with amnesia (KF). They found his STM for digits when read out to him was poor but his recall was better when he read them himself. Research shows that there could be multiple elements to STM.
    • MORE THAN ONE TYPE OF REHEARSAL - Craik & Watkins (1973) found that rehearsal type is more important than how many times you rehearse it. Maintenance rehearsal is already mentioned but ELABORATIVE rehearsal links short term knowledge to existing knowledge so it can be sent ot the LTM.
