- Come from a very warm, dry environment, and are exotherms.
- over 1/3 of the enclosure = warm basking area - 37.78°c to 48.89°c
- Basking lamp to be on for 10 - 12 hours of the day, then at night ALL lights to be turned off to give lizard clear day/night cycle
- 2/3 of the enclosure = 26.67°c
- over 1/3 of the enclosure = warm basking area - 37.78°c to 48.89°c
- Wooden vivarium - 4x2x2 ft
- Various toys and enrichment when they are juvenile to prevent too much open space - remove as the lizard grows
- Come from a very warm, dry environment, and are exotherms.
- Normal Behaviour Patterns
- Bedding to be made of beach woodchip to prevent from humidity, and is unlikely to stick to lizard's feet.
- Natural rocks i.e. slate and artificial ornaments are suitable to allow for secondary belly feet to radiate from warm objects
- Full and partial cover from UV and basking light
- Full cover - caves, flat cork pieces etc
- Partial cover - tall plants, trailing plants, themed artificial ornaments such as skulls, cacti etc.
- Husbandry
- They defecate 1-4 times a day, and faeces should be removed from habitat daily
- They are a desert species, so should not be bathed. this is not natural behaviour for them, plus they could inhale water, leading to various other health issues such as pneumonia
- Company
- They can tend to be aggressive towards other members of their species
- They should be housed alone, one male with up to 3 females, or just females together (females will end up forming a hierarchy)
- They tend to lead a solitary lifestyle
- They can tend to be aggressive towards other members of their species
- Water
- Difficulties and Consequences of not meeting the Needs
- Like most animals/pets, if the Needs are not met for the animal, it could get quite poorly and even die
- i.e. a wrong diet can lead to dehydration and impaction
- i.e. no UVB light can lead to lack of calcium, and further to metabolic bone disease and other illnesses
- i.e. no heat lamp can lead to immobility and malnutrition due to not eating
