  • Mineral deficiencies and tests
    • Different minerals have different functions within the body, and if enough of the minerals aren't taken then toe body will lack in the things the minerals provide
      • Calcium
        • Brain functions
        • Muscle contrac-tions
        • Blood clotting
        • Healthy bones
      • Sodium
        • Transmit-ting electrical (Nervous) impulses
        • Flame test - Sterilise metal loop using hydrochloric acid, dip the wire loop in the metal compound and put it into the flame of a bunsen burner. The colour will tell you what metal ion is on the compound
          • Calcium
            • Brain functions
            • Muscle contrac-tions
            • Blood clotting
            • Healthy bones
          • Potassium
            • Healthy heart
            • Regulates blood pressure
      • Copper
        • Growth and develop-ment

          • Potassium
            • Healthy heart
            • Regulates blood pressure
      • Chlorides
        • Fluid balance
        • To test for halide ions dilute nitric acid and silver nitrate solution are added to the unknown solution, and the colour of the precipitate is observed
          • Test for different ions
            • Ammonium tests - WHen sodium hydroxide solution is heated with NH4 solution, ammonia gaas is given off. If sodium hydroxide solution is added to an unknown solution and ammonia gas is given off that menas NH4 ions are present
              • We can test for ammonia with damp red litmus paper - If ammonia is present then the litmus paper will turn blue
          • Bromides
      • Iodides
        • Thyroid functions
