    • When the Directory began there were no foreign armies in France, the first coalition had ended, leaving only Britain and Austria at war. Spain and Holland had become allies and the aggressive FP was benefiting directors due to links with war profiteers.

        • Siege of Toulon devised a plan that drove out British navy. Granted him promotion.
        • After Thermidor he was sent to prison for his links with Robes, kept him from a worse fate.
        • 1795 in Paris defended NC against Vendemiaire uprising, use of cannon fire earned him command of army of Italy.
      • Son of a minor aristocratic family, sent from Corsica to study. If not for the revolution he would have had a moderate career. Supported the revolution and his pamphlets caught the eye of Augustin (Robe's bro)
      • Historians state he exhibited two aspects of Corsican stereotype:
        • Family First; appointed brothers as kingship
    • Italian Campaign (1796-97)
      • Unexpectedly successful. He returned to France a hero.
      • Took over a small army and won a series of victories. Collected money from art treasures that funded D and sent back troops to help with Coup of Fructidor.
      • Drove Austrians out of Italy and forced them to sign Treat of Campo Formio in Oct 1797, without D.
    • Egyptian Campaign (1798)
      • Attack British interests. Army won the battle of Pyramids but was unsuccessful in capturing Syria. His fleet was destroyed by Nelson at the Battle of Nile; his army was trapped.
      • In August he left, back to France, and the army remained there until they were defeated by Britain in 1801.
