  • Methods used the in 18th Century to uphold law.
    • The Watch
      • Parishes within London appointed constables who job it was to arrest criminals and bring them before the Justices of the Peace.
        • Night eatchmen patrolled the streets between 9pm-dawn.
      • In London there were daytime patrols, who were conducted by the City Marshalls.
        • They were known as Beadles.
    • Constables
      • Householders were appointed as constables working a rota system
        • Householders also had to carry out night watch on a rota system.
        • People began to pay deputies to do it in their place.
          • It wasn't popular because they were unpaid.
          • Watch Acts was passed, which replaced voluntary people with paid law officers.
    • By 1700, the government offered rewards for catching criminals.
      • Thief takers-were often members of the criminal underworld.
        • They hunted stolen goods to claim the rewards.
        • Jonathon Wild
          • Ran a gang of theives
          • He kept the goods his gang stole
          • He claimed his agents recovered stolen items
          • He stole goods in return for rewards.
            • He was hung in Tyburn, London in 1725.
