        • human & animal waste was thrown in streets and rivers and
        • cess pits- pits in the ground which collected waste
      • public health became worse
        • Roman Public health was destroyed in war
        • spent a lot of money on weapons for war instead of medicine
    • Churches Help
      • set up medical schools to train doctors
      • set up hospitals where the elderly could rest
      • set up monasteries with a fresh water system. the water system was only used by monks
      • spread Galen's & Hippocrates' work.
    • Churches Prevention
      • dissection was forbidden
      • all books were handwritten
        • this stopped any criticisms of Galen's work
      • taught people disease was a punishment from God
      • taught religious cures.
        • e.g. whipping
