  • Left Displaced Abomasum
    • definition
      • abomasum fill with gas and rise to LHS
      • decreased DMI around calving lead to hypoglycaemai, systemic disease and fatty liver disease = decreased motility
      • decreased motility=build up gas = reduced feeding= more space
      • risk factors
        • obese cows at calving
        • poor calving management
        • periparturient disease
        • poor feed access
        • lack dietary long fibre
        • poor control of energy balance around calving
        • sudden increase of concentrates
        • hypoglycaemia
    • Signalment
      • post calving
      • sprig time - lack of fibre in spring grass
    • Clinical signs
      • decreased milk yeild
      • decreased feed intake
      • poor rumen turnover
      • underlying primary disease (mastitis/ metritis)
    • diagnostics
      • auscultate abdomen = ping sound
    • prevention
      • maximise DMI around calving/ early lactation
      • transition diet to long fibre
      • treat underlying disease
    • Treatment
      • conservative
        • roll
        • oral propylene glycol
        • oral fluids/ electrolytes
        • long fibre diet
        • usually 70-80% relapse
      • semi-surgical
        • roll cow
        • insert toggle through trocar into abomasum while cow in dorsal recumbency
      • surgical
