- Universality
- Any underlying characteristic of human beings that can be applied regardless of upbringing
- Gender bias
- When research offers a view that does not justifiably represent the experience of men and women
- Androcentrism
- 'Male-oriented', when normal behaviour is judged according to a male standard
- Alpha bias
- Focusses on differences between men and women - tends to exaggerate the differences
- Beta bias
- Focusses on similarities between men and women - tends to minimise the differences

- Judging one cultural by the standards of one's own culture - may lead to prejudice

- Approach looks at behaviour from outside of a given culture and attempts to describe those behaviours as universal
