  • How to make Amines- The two techniques
    • 1) ELECTROPHILIC SUBSTITUTION
      • This involves the addition of a haloalkane to NH3. The haloalkane loses the halogen and replaces the H on ammonia.
        • If the haloalkane is in excess then a quarternary amine is formed If the NH3 is in excess then a primary amine is only formed
    • 2) THE REDUCTION OF A NITRILE
      • This always makes a primary amine
