          • Republican dominance maintained.
      • 1920 - 1945.
        • Main aim to reduce federal government's activity and spending.
        • President, Congress and the Supreme Court.
        • Continued laissez-faire attitude.
        • The Great Depression struck.
          • Voluntarism was introduced but not effective.
        • Reduced government spending, reduced taxes.
        • Hoover refused direct government intervention which make the situation much worse.
        • FDR brought in Alphabet Agencies and emergency legislation.
        • Republican's held conservative views and disliked any government intervention.
          • This is important as it sets up what was to come in the late 20th century.
        • Wanted to stay isolationists, but could never truly go back after the wars.

        • Increased social security programme and the minimum wage.
        • Improved employment rates.
        • A lot of social reform, with the beginning of a new era.
        • Elections were now televised and the media were more involved, playing an important role in the government.
        • Great society programme.
        • More focused on domestic policies.
        • Watergate - highlight of Nixon's presidency, mass scandal.
        • Democratic dominance, different views.
        • Finally recovered following the wars, the US were now recognised as a superpower.

    • President, Congress and the Supreme court.
    • Republican dominance, with the exception of two Democratic presidents.
      • Political corruption.
    • Introduced the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments.
    • The Gilded Age.
    • Isolationists.
    • 1865 - 1877, Radical Reconstruction
