      • Key foreign policy achievement for Henry - Spain was a major power after its unification in 1479
      • Eng and Spain were rivals, but both had common animosity towards France
      • 1488 - H suggested marriage of oldest son Arthur and Catherine of Aragon - demands about size of Catherine's dowry and not to help Eng rebels - Ferdinand agreed
      • Tudor dynasty recognised as equal by one of the leading royal families in Europe - key to H a he wanted to secure international recognition of his kingship legitimacy

      • Charles VIII success in Italy - European rulers worried about French power
      • 1495 League of Venice - Pope Alexander VI, HRE Maximilian I, Aragon’s Ferdinand II, Venice, and Milan, in opposition to Charles VIII of France, who had invaded Italy in 1494. The allies forced the French out of Italy in 1496.
      • Oct 1946 - Ferdinand and H concluded marriage agreement of Arthur and Catherine. In the same year, Ferdinand secured Eng into new 'Holy League' - on H's condition that H wouldn't go to war w/ France
        • 1946 - League concluded, established trading relations between Eng and Burgundy (F)
