  • Gross Neuroanatomy
    • Aristotle - The heart was a better candidate for behaviour, Claudius Galen - Cerebral ventricles are involved in controlling the body, contraction of ventricles sends the fluids = brain controls body
    • Efferent signals (away from brain and spinal cord)- Linking where brain and spinal cord send signals to the muscles, joints and skin
    • Afferent signals (towards brain and spinal cord)- Linking skin, muscles and joints and send sensory signals to the spinal cord and brain
    • Left hemisphere = language and right hemisphere = face perception and intonation of language
      • Left hemisphere better at seeing fine details whereas right hemisphere sees big picture in a blurry view
    • Grey matter = cell bodies and white matter = wires/axons connecting nerve cells. Surface grey matter (Cerebral cortex) and sulci and gyri are grey matter.
    • Subcortical structures are below the cortex eg. cerebellum, basal ganglia and thalamus. Midbrain structures (Brain stem) = cerebellum, cranial nerves
      • Cerebellum has fine gyri and white matter which connects it to the brain stem (interconnected with info going out of the brain) and cranial nerves bring visual, auditory and olfactory information and control facial muscles and sensation
    • The Circle of Willis - Compensate and redistributes blood if one of the major supplies is blocked.
    • The Wet brain - Embedded in fluid and cushioned by fluids to let it absorb shocks that it receives.
