  • FEMINIST THEOLOGIANS
    • How do Daly & Ruether compare?
      • Similarities
        • Both argue Christianity is wrong and the source of problems
        • Christianity has lead to patriarchy for no just reason
        • Return to nature is needed to fully understand God
        • Females offer a different type of spirituality
        • Both hated the fact women could not succeed in the Church nor have abortions .
      • Differences
        • Daly wants to get rid of Christianity (abandon it) whereas Ruether wants reform
        • Daly argues that only females can experience God & a trans valuation can only be done by females
        • Daly focuses more on the Old Testament whereas Ruether focuses on both
    • Mary Daly
      • Christian Society
        • Christianity is the source of all problems within society. As God was male this has justified the abuse of women.
        • It has developed “phallic values”. These are values that support the idea of men being the dominant leaders of society. It elevates men and destroys women
        • Example values include male enjoyment and sexual dominance symbolic in the cross. Mary is also a hollow egg shell & a total **** victim.
        • The maleness of Christ: If God is male then the male is God
      • Post Christian Society
        • This means a wiping of all society’s values and starting afresh. The death of God.This can ONLY be done by women.
        • The transvaluation can be done through a return to nature. Women have a special spiritual connection to nature that has been ruined by Christianity. These values can be removed if we do not use the word God & replace it with “be-ing”.
        • To move away from these phallic values we need a “transvaluation” and a post Christian society.
        • We should aim to use negative terms referencing women to empower them e.g.nag, spinster, witch.
      • Unholy Trinity
        • War
          • There are terribly inconsistent teachings within Christianity.
          • Men are constantly violent and this is covered up as“collateral damage”.
          • This comes from a phalic morality and phallic mentality.
          • TO change this we need to leave Christianity.
          • It constantly justifies war and just shows that it is not consistent. War ok but abortion not?!
        • ****
          • Both literal and metaphorical. Daly called it“rapism”.
          • The literal way is through examples such as Mary and Lot’s willingness to give his daughters to men.
          • Hysterectomy is also a form of **** due to the way it changes a woman and she cannot return to her former self.
          • .This also happens today with FGM and general ****
          • It is metaphorical in the way women are treated as objects. “arm chair rapists”.This is men who are happy to sit down and view women as objects. Either through their work or through the watching of ****.
        • Genocide
          • women are a sexual caste who are cast to one side.
          • She called them the touchable caste.
          • Through the Church’s support of war they also commit genocide.
          • Focusing on women, they are victims of genocide through their teachings against abortion, being unable to be leaders and through their general support of war which ultimately would lead to female victims.
      • Daly’s conclusions
        • Christianity needs to be abandoned and we need to start over. Women cannot flourish in this patriarchal society and we need a new religion lead by women which focuses on nature.
    • Rosemary Radford Ruether
      • Male Warrior Messiah Expectation
        • This is something that was predicted in the old testament. People expected the Messiah to be a male warrior who would liberate them and reign over them. The type of Messiah that would promote patriarchy.
        • The reality Jesus did not meet this expectation. He was much more of a servant king e,g. washing his disciples feet & ultimately dying for our sins “They did not expect him to suffer and die”
        • This means that Christianity needs to be reinterpreted as Jesus did not meet the male warrior messiah expectation. Currently,Christianity behaves in a way suggestive of the MWME. The Jesus we experienced this wanted equality and freedom for all.
      • Female wisdom
        • Wisdom is a term we associate with God and is a female term (Sophia).
        • In the book of Proverbs it refers to God/ wisdom and states things like “She calls out”.
        • Jesus was the incarnation of wisdom. However, he was male. It is not wrong to associate wisdom with God thus showing God can be seen in female terms.
        • However, as Jesus was male this has caused some problems. Christians seem to have forgotten about the femaleness of God and focus on the male.
      • What do Christians need to do?
        • They need to return to nature to fully understand God andremove the male expectation.
        • We need to move away from patriarchy and learn about God through nature.
        • All Christians should embrace the opportunities for female priests and stop being so critical of women and abortion.
        • Jesus shows that everyone can be saved as he was a man forthe people, not someone who promoted male domination
      • Ruether's Conclusions
        • Christianity has got it wrong and has no legitimate reason for patriarchy. This is because Jesus was not what he was expected to be!

rather one-sided aint gonna lie. could use more detail on the side showing the Christian support of women over the years. for example, Paul's public support of women in the bible and the catechism of the catholic church highlighting the importance of women throughout catholic beliefs and publicly supporting women in general removing the overstated view of the patriarchy in the catholic church.
