- Family Therapy
- How does it work?
- NICE recommends that all Ps should be offered FT
- It reduces the rate of relapse by half (Garety)
- They help the P and careers to understand and deal with sz
- This is aimed at reducing the level of EE and rate of relapse
- Helps the relative to try and notice the signs of a relpase
- Normally offered between 3 and 12 months and for a min of 10 sessions
- Pharoah et al. (2010)
- Some reported an improvement in mental state and some did not
- The studies were conducted in Europe, Asia and North America. They were RCTs.
- FT increased P's compliance to take medication
- He reviewed 53 studies which looked at the effectiveness of family therapy (FT)
- Some improvement in general function but little in employment or independent living
- Reduction in relapse and readmission for 24 months after FT
- Evaluation
- Impact on family - + impact on coping and problem solving, family functioning and relationship quality
- Why is it effective - It may be down to the increased compliance with meds
- Is it worthwhile - Garety says that FT may not improve further than standard care
- Methodology
- Blinding - Of the 53 studies 10 did not use blinding and 16 did not say
- Random allocation - many of the 53 studies were from the PRC and some claimed to use RA when they did not
- There are economic benefits which include less hospitalisation fees due to lower rate of relapse
- How does it work?
