    • Reconstituted
      • family unit where one or both parents have children from a previous relationship, but they have combined to form a new family.
    • Extended
      • a family which extends beyond the nuclear family to include grandparents and other relatives.
    • Single Parent
      • parent who cares for children without the assistance of another parent in the home
    • Beanpole
      • multi-generational extended family
        • this means that there are many different generations within the family but they have few siblings in each generation.
    • Cohabiting
      • living arrangement in which an unmarried couple lives together in a long-term relationship that resembles a marriage.
    • Traditional nuclear
      • consists of a married couple and their biological child or children.
    • Same sex
      • LGBT people raising one or more children as parents or foster care parents.
