- Factors affecting river discharge
- Physical factors
- Permeable and porous rock lets water infiltrate through
- Impermeable rock will result in lots of surface run off.
- A steep mountain is likely to have lots of surface run off from rainfall.
- Very dry, wet and frozen soil will not let any water through creating lots of surface run off.
- Trees intercept water, so more trees less flooding.
- Human Factors
- Paved driveways, main reason for flooding.
- A ploughed field, the troughs in the field act like river channels
- snowman, as it melts more water will be added to the river.
- built up areas means lots of tarmac and paving stones, creating surface run off meaning the rainfall will reach the river quickly therefore lots of flooding will happen.
