  • Extinction and Speciation
    • Extinction happens if you can't evolve quickly enough
      • Environment Change ( eg destruction of habitats)
      • New Predators kill them all ( eg hunters)
      • New Disease kills them all
      • Can't compete with another species for food
      • Catastrophic Event ( eg Volcano eruption)
    • Speciation - the development of a new species
      • A species is a group of similar organisms that can reproduce to give fertile offspring
      • Speciation occurs when populations of the same species become to different that they can no longer breed together to produce fertile offspring
    • Isolation and natural selection lead to speciation
      • Speciation - the development of a new species
        • A species is a group of similar organisms that can reproduce to give fertile offspring
        • Speciation occurs when populations of the same species become to different that they can no longer breed together to produce fertile offspring
      • Isolation - where populations of a species are separated due to a physical barrier eg floods and earthquakes
        • Conditions on either side of the barrier will have different conditions  eg different climates - animals will have to adapt.
        • Eventually, individuals from different populations will have changed so much that they won't be able to breed with one another.
          • The two groups will become separate species
