- The strange situation can be criticised for causing unnecessary distress to the child
- It is a highly standardised procedure involving timed episodes and rigorous analysis of the observed behaviour. In this sense, it is a replicable and objective research method
- Dont take into account individual differences of the children
- Lack ecological validity as the situation is unfamiliar for the child
- Cannot relate it to daycare as it is different situation to being left alone with a stranger
