  • Evaluation of MSM
    • Supporting evidence - various experimental studies show the distinction between STM and LTM, e.g. Glanzer and Cunitz. There is also case study support evidencing functional distinction between STM and LTM.
    • Challenging evidence - case study evidence challenges single LTM store, e.g. Wearing couldn't recall past life but could recall how to play the piano. This suggests that LTM is not one unitary store, like MSM suggests.
    • Other explanations - different ideas exist, e.g. WMM, as MSM is an over simplistic view of memory.
    • Usefulness - general theoretical framework for understanding memory which has been influential, but the model over emphasises the role of rehearsal in the transfer of info from STM to LTM.
    • Testable - the MSM contains a number of hypotheses, e.g. memory consists of two separate stores and info is transferred from STM to LTM by rehearsal.
