  • Evaluation for the multi-store model of memory
    • Strength - Controlled lab studies on capacity, duration and coding support the existence of a separate short and long term memory.
      • Studies using brain scanning techniques demonstrated that there's a difference between STM and LTM. For example, Beardsley (1997) found that the prefrontal cortex is active during STM but LTM tasks. Squire et al (1992) also used brain scanning and found the hippocampus was activated when LTM was engaged.
    • Strength - case studies.HM had his hippocampus removed to reduce the effect of his severe epilepsy. HM's personality and intellect remained intact but he could not form LTMs, but he could remember things from before the surgery.

    • Limitations - the multi-store model is too simple. The MSM suggests that both STM and LTM are single 'unitary' stores. However, research doesn't support this. Baddeley and Hitch (1974) suggested that they weren't single stores, and comprised of many separate components. This led them to product the Working Memory Model.
    • Long term memory involves more than maintenance rehearsal.
      • Craik and Lockhart (1972) suggested that enduring memories are created by the processing you do, rather than through maintenance rehearsal; things that are processed more deeply are more memorable just because of the way they were processed. 'Deep' means doing more complicated things with the item to be remembered rather than just repeating it.
