  • Functions of elections
    • Representation
      • Allows the public to select who they want to represent their wishes in Parliament and make decisions on our behalf.
    • Holding Government acountable
      • Allows us to deliver a verdict on the current government and if we are dissatisfied, we can remove them and elect a new government into power.
        • E.g. 1997 general election - people voted in Labour instead of Conservatives
    • Policy decision making
      • The public will decide, during an election, which of the different parties manifestos should be put into practice.
    • Democratic legitimacy
      • A way of demonstrating consent to be ruled by the government - and grants a mandate to govern.
    • Political education
      • People listen to campaigning parties, during an election campaign, to help them decide what they want to vote for and as a result of this they understand politics better.
    • Participation
      • Opportunity for citizens to actively take part in the political process.
