            • 7th of August, - sent fire ships into Spanish vessels anchored in Calais
              • undermined Spanish strategy as driven from Armada’s main anchorage and Spanish lost vital anchors and cables.
            • 8th August - captured Medina Sidonia and several of his ships, causing 3 two sink
        • MQS executed in 1587 and Babington executed in 1586 - shows EI’s control
        • EI removed Don John from his position as ambassador at court after the Pacification of Ghent in 1576
          • Alleviates dynastic threat as John had links to MQS

        • 1594 Capture of Madre Dois
          • privateers made £140,000 in profit, presenting EI with a substantial sum
        • 1596 - Capture of Cadiz
          • assisted PII’s bankruptcy
          • but conflict of interest between Ei’s aim and privateers
            • Cadiz simply looted for money rather than use it to invade Lisbon
    • Failures
      • Disputes over Trade
        • 1589 - Drake’s expedition to Portugal
          • Drake’s aim to secure Azores contradictory to EI
            • no desire to bring about destruction of Spanish Empire
            • Antagonised PII -  believed if EI had control of the Azores they could destroy the whole basis of Spanish trade with the Americas
        • 1593 -Frobisher  and Hawkins made no profit
      • War with Netherlands
        • Failed Interventions
          • Leicester’s expedition
            • Stanley and Yorke joined Parma
              • presented Parma with strategically significant Zutphen and Deventer
              • Dutch believed that EI had intended to take over the united provinces.
            • led to coup d'etat
          • 1582 - Anjou’s Dutch Campaign
            • failures led to Parma gaining huge momentum,  only Zeeland + Holland in rebel hands
              • led to HIII’s rejection of an anti-Spanish alliance with EI in 1582
                • EI needed HIII backing as member of the  Catholic Guise family
                  • able to aid MQS
        • 1580 - Netherlands divided into Union of Utrecht and Arras
          • rebels became religiously divided with Arras Catholic, controlled by Spain and Utrecht Protestant
