- CAUSES
- Often runs in families
- strongly associated with a number of genetic mutations, however it is though that environmental factors trigger the condition
- if you were introduced to gluten as a baby before 6 months old may increase the risk
- an abnormal immune system reaction to the protein gluten
- SYMPTOMS
- Indigestion
- abdominal pain
- bloating and flatulence
- vomiting ( usually children)
- fatigue
- unexpected weight loss
- difficulty getting pregnant
- TREATMENT+ PREVENTION
- Give up all foods containing gluten for life
- vaccinations e.g. flu jab, individuals with coeliac disease are more vulnerable to infection
- vitamin and mineral supplements can also help correct any dietary deficiencies
