  • Define democratic legitimacy
    • legitimacy - ones right to exercise power
      • LEGITIMACY can be obtained through referendums and elections
        • REFERENDUM -  A decision made directly by the people for he people - it is usually a YES or NO vote  i.e. should the UK leave the EU [yes or no]
        • ELECTION - A vote where people elect a representative that will make decisions on their behalf

    • compulsory voting - this means that everyone who is allowed to vote must cast a vote
    • compulsory voting has been established in Australia
    • compulsory voting can create political apathy - people will just elect anyone for the sake of it
    • will ensure that the decision  made is 100% legitimate making it easier to pass legislation
