deep water coral reefs

  • Deep water coral reefs
    • ecological features
      • do not have the symbiotic photosynthetic algae that are found in tropical reefs-less food energy available
      • slow rate of deep water coral growth means hat reefs recover much more slowly from damage
    • Importance
      • only found in 1970s so very little has been discovered and research
      • support a large biomass of fish but these are often slow growing species with a low reproductive rate so it is easy to over exploite the populations
    • Threats
      • the slow rate of coral reef growth-it will take many hundred years for the damage to be repaired
      • increase in co2-causing the acidification of oceans-eventually threaten the survival of deep water corals
    • conservation efforts
      • protected areas have been established to stop damaging activities
