- Deep water coral reefs
- ecological features
- do not have the symbiotic photosynthetic algae that are found in tropical reefs-less food energy available
- slow rate of deep water coral growth means hat reefs recover much more slowly from damage
- Importance
- only found in 1970s so very little has been discovered and research
- support a large biomass of fish but these are often slow growing species with a low reproductive rate so it is easy to over exploite the populations
- Threats
- the slow rate of coral reef growth-it will take many hundred years for the damage to be repaired
- increase in co2-causing the acidification of oceans-eventually threaten the survival of deep water corals
- conservation efforts
- protected areas have been established to stop damaging activities
- ecological features
