  • Cystic Fibrosis
    • Symptoms
      • Cystic fibrosis affects cells that make mucus, sweat, and digestive fluids.
        • These fluids are thick in cystic fibrosis patients and cause the blockage of ducts throughout the body
          • The lungs and the digestive system are the areas that are mainly affected
        • Symptoms may appear soon after birth or in early childhood
          • In rare cases they are not manifested until adulthood
      • Persistent cough with phlegm
      • Postnatal drip
      • Salty tasting skin
      • Wheezing
      • Sinusitis
      • Inability to exercise
      • Male infertility
      • Poor growth and low body weight despite a good appetite
        • Malnutrition
      • Blockage in the intestinal especially in newborns
      • Diarrhoea
        • Constipation
    • Identified needs
      • Respiratory aid - breathing exercises and physiotherapy to stay as fit and healthy as possible
      • Nutritional aid - people with cystic fibrosis need twice the number of calories
        • Extra nutrition and calories means that people with cystic fibrosis do not become underweight and prevents malnutrition
      • Vaccinations - to prevent avoid people with cystic fibrosis getting severely ill will illnesses that could have been lessened by vaccinations
        • Some illnesses cold be life threatening
      • Stress management
        • Anxiety and depression are common among patients and their carers
          • Managing stress includes:
            • Yoga
            • Meditation
            • Exercise
            • Hobbies
      • Lung transplant
        • If lung failure is occurring then a lung transplant may be given
          • Does not guarantee a long life - about 10 years
    • Adjustments needed
      • The symptoms can be so varied that it is hard to describe what may be useful to a group of individuals
      • Creating schedules and sticking to them such as treatment times and other therapies
      • Alowing for service users to take a break - tiredness means that they are more susceptible to catch infections
      • Working from hone during cold and flue seasons should be allowed
