      • They looked at 32 studies of attachment behaviour
      • They looked at 2000 strange situation classifications from 8 countries
      • They looked for inter-cultural and intra-cultural differences
      • Some of the samples were very small in some some countries but large in others which could have resulted in biased samples
      • This is a western techniques for western children so it could have misrepresented children from countries like Japan
      • All of the studies were based on the strange situation so the techniques would have been the same in all studies
    • The two types of cultures
      • Individualist
        • Better obedience and social behaviour
        • Focus on interpersonal development
        • Less antisocial behaviour
        • Emphasis on group cooperation
        • E.g. China, Japan
      • Collectivist
        • Mother's react favorably to independence
        • More antisocial behaviour
        • Focus on developing initiative in infants
        • E.g UK, USA, Germany, Sweeden
        • Emphasis on personal achievement
