  • Correlation
    • positive correlation
      • value of one of the variables increases, the values of the second variable also increase
      • as the value of one of the variables decreases, the value of the other variable also decreases
    • negative correlation
      • as the values of one of the variables increase, the values of the second variable decrease
      • as the value of one of the variables decreases the value of the other increases
    • no correlation
      • shows no relationship between the variables
    • Strengths
      • allows researcher to establish that two variables are linked
      • calculate the strength of the relationship between two variables by calculating the correlation coefficient
      • easier as there is not IV to manipulate and dont have to control variables
    • weaknesses
      • cannot establish a cause and effect relationships- eg just because one variable is linked to another it doesnt mean that one causes the other
      • lack of correlation may not mean there is no relationship, it could just be non-linear
      • two variables can seem to be correlated, but when other variables are accounted for the seeming correlation disappears- called a spurious correlation
