  • Carbon (Fossil Fuel 1)
    • Different forms of carbon cause different problems:
      • If it combusts (burns) by lots of oxygen, it forms lots of carbon dioxide. This adds to CO2 already found in the atmosphere.
      • If there is little O (eg car engine) then small amounts of CO and particulates of carbon are produced.
    • Carbon Dioxide:
      • Stays in the atmosphere causing problems until it is removed.
      • Is removed by photosynthesis and dissolves in rain water & seas.
      • If humans add extra CO2, then even with ways of removing CO2 it will keep on increasing.
      • Increase in CO2 increases green house effect.
    • Carbon Monoxide:
      • Only has one oxygen atom, caused by incomplete burning when there isn't enough oxygen available.
      • It is poisonous (makes you drowsy, gives you head aches and can sometimes kill.
    • Particulate Carbon:
      • Produced when fuels don't burn completely.
      • They just float around the atmosphere, eventually falling back to the ground as soot.
