    • Changing Quality of Life
      • Government controlled goods prices = poorest families could afford goods.
      • Ministry of Food encouraged allotments/gardens 'dig for victory'.
      • Clothing rationed, 'make do and mend'.
      • Rationing continued until 1954, bread&meat still being rationed.
      • Rationing made life equal between the class systems, they were almost at an equal level.
      • 60,000 killed by German bombs during the Blitz.
      • Over 1 million children evacuated to the countrysdie
      • National Service Act - All men aged 18-41 (except those doing jobs essential to the war effort) were deemed for armed service.
    • Welfare State
      • 1942 Beveridge Report highlihgted the need for change and suggested the goevrnmnent tackle the 'five giants'. Through introducing National Insurance, NHS, better education, rehousing and the maintenance of full employment.
      • Labour implemented Beveridge's ideas: The Family Allowances Act of 1945, The National Insurance Act of 1946, The Industrial Accidents Act of 1948 and the National Assistance Act of 1948.
      • The National Health Service Act provides free hospital treatment, dental and optical care at point of treatment.
      • The Education Act, steered through parliament by Education Minister, R.A Butler, provided free secondary education for all pupils. Children would be allocated to either grammar, secondary modern or technical schools based on an examination at the age of 11. Intended to provide equal opportunities for children of all backgrounds. School leaving age raised to 15.
    • Industrial Relations
      • WW2 helped create full employment and a post-war commitment from Labour and Conservatives to maintain it.
        • This strengthened the bargaining position of the trade unions.
      • The war also lead to the inclusion of trade unionists such as Ernest Bevin in many government decisions.
