Blood Vessels

?
View mindmap
  • blood vessels
    • Arteries
      • small lumen
      • high hydrostatic pressure
      • Wall contains smooth muscle
      • Thick walls with elastic tissue to stretch and recoil
      • Endothelium  is folded allowing to stretch.
    • capillaries
      • Only has endothelium
      • Lumen is very narrow
      • Allow exchange of materials via tissue fluid.
      • As lumen is  small it forces red blood cells through causing higher hydrostatic pressure than in veins.
    • Veins
      • Valves to prevent back flow
      • Thinner layers of elastic tissue, smooth muscle and collagen.
