  • blood pressure
    • Smoking can increase bp
      • Carbon monoxide
        • combines with the haemoglobin in red blood cells - reduces the amount of oxygen they can carry.
        • the tissues cant get enough oxyegen- to make up for this the heart rate has to increase. Heart contracts more frequently - increases bp.
      • nicotene
        • This increases heart rate. - Heart contracts more often, increasing the blood pressure.
    • Heart disease.
      • If your diet is high in saturated fat, it is more likely that you develop some kind of great disease - such as heart attacks.
        • 1) Cholesterol is a fatty substance and eating lots of fatty foods has been linked to high levels of cholesterol in the blood.
        • 2) You need some cholesterol in your blood for things like making cell membranes. If you get too much cholesterol it builds up in the arteries.
        • 3) This forms plaques in the artery walls witch narrows the arteries. - The plaques restrict the flow of blood - This can lead to heart attack.
      • High salt levels can increase your bp.
        • Salt is part of a healthy diet - but eating too much salt can cause high bp.
      • Narrow arteries increase the risk of a heart attack.
        • The heart muscle is supplied with blood from the coronary arteries .
          • If these become narrowed blood flow to heart is restricted and the heart muscle receives less oxygen.
        • A thrombosis (blood clot) also restricts the blood flow.
          • If a thrombosis occurs in an already narrow artery, blood flow to the heart might be blocked completley.
            • If this happens an area of the heart might be completley blocked off from oxygen.
              • This causes a heart attack
