  • Biological approach
    • genetics
      • genotype: set of genes some one has
      • Phenotype: characteristic someone has
      • genotype + environment = phenotype
    • theory of evolution
      • natural selection
        • principle of diversity- variation within a species
        • principle of interaction- how species adapt to fit in with environment
        • principle of differential amplification-those who adapt survive/ reproduce
      • sexual selection
        • women have to be selective in partners
        • men with undesirable traits will not reproduce and die out
    • main assumptions
      • everything psychological is biological
      • psychologist should study biological processes/ structures
      • mind lives in brain
      • psychologists should study brain, nervous stystem etc.
    • strengths
      • scientific
        • uses scientific methods, e.g. fMRI and twin studies
          • reliable results, increases scientific credibility.
      • real life application
        • biological approach has been used to develop drug therapies
          • improves peoples quality of life.
    • limitations
      • deterministic
        • sees behaviour as determined by genetics hormones, no free will
          • suggests we have no free will or responsibility over behaviour,
      • nature/nurture?
        • studies on genetics are mainly twin studies
          • same genes but also same upbringing
            • can't seperate nature from nurture
      • correlation but not causation
        • no evidence shows causation
          • we don't really know what's happening
