- ATYPICAL GENDER EXP - SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGICAL EXP
- PSYCHOANALYTIC THEORY
- GID in males is caused by the child experiencing extreme seperation anxiety before gender identity has been established (argued by Ovesey and Person 1973).
- Child fantasises of a symbolic fusion with his mother to relieve the anxiety and danger of seperation is removed.
- Consequence is the child becomes the mother and adopts female gender identity.
- COGNITIVE EXP
- Lynn Liben and Rebecca Bigler 2000 proposed an extension of gender schema theory emphasising individual differences in gender identity.
- 2nd pathway = the PERSONAL PATHWAY - describes how childs gender attitudes are affected by his or her activity.
- Individuals personal interests may become more dominant than the gender identity.
- May lead to androgynous behaviour and flexibile attitude to gender.
- In small minority may lead to eventual formation of GID.
