- Positivist (Durkheim)- Scientific measures should be used. Especially comparative methods to discover social facts, which are external to sociologist so can be studied objectively.
- Against
- Weber- values are central to society so inevitably influence sociologist e.g. topic choice. However, analysis can be value free if the researcher de-humanises themselves.
- Gomm- Value free sociology is impossible as sociologist react to political, social and economic events. it is useful to look at what isn't studied in order to see if ideological hegemony takesplace. scientific values are adopted so value freedo isn't achieved.
