    • Society and class divides
      • J.B. Priestly wrote, An Inspector Calls, in 1945, just after the Second World War and set just before the First World War, in 1912.
      • - In 1912, society wasn’t equal-people with more money and from a higher class had more power.
      • Priestly used the unequal society of 1912 as a setting to get people to think about inequality in 1945
    • The war years affected J.B. Priestley’s life and writing
      • An Inspectors Calls was written near the end of the Second World War so, the audience would have seen how War affected everyone. Soldiers were returning from the war and hoping for a better life.
      • Inspector Calls asks the audience to unite to improve society (Priestley’s views were left wing (i.e. socialists) he founded various socialist organizations)
    • 1945
      • There was a great desire for social change. Immediately after The Second World War, Clement Attlee's Labour Party won a landslide victory over Winston Churchill and the Conservatives.
      • As a result of the wars, women had earned a more valued place in society.
      • Class distinctions had been greatly reduced as a result of two world wars.
      • The Second World War ended on 8 May 1945. People were recovering from six years of warfare.
