    • entertainment industry excelled: average working week dropped from 47.4 - 44.2 hrs = more leisure time
    • average wages rose by 11%= workers had more disposable income
    • spare time & money used in entertainment
    • RADIO
      • almost everyone listened to radio & had their own set
      • people who couldn't afford a radio could get one in instalments
      • choice of programmes grew quickly
      • august 1921: one licensed radio station, by end of 1922= 508 stations
      • by 1929: new network NBC was making $150 million a year
      • 60 000 radios= 1920
      • 10 000 000 radios by 1929
    • JAZZ
      • radio gave more access to new music
      • jazz popular among young people
      • african americans moved from the country to city & brought jazz and blues music with them
      • blues music= popular among african americans
      • jazz = popular among young whites and african americans
      • 192s= jazz age with new dances like the Charleston
      • older generations saw jazz & the likes as corrupt & bad influence on young people
    • SPORT
      • baseball = big money sport- legendary teams like New York Yankees & Boston Red Sox
      • prominent people like Al Capone were baseball fans
      • boxing was also very popular
    • CINEMA
      • Hollywood = big film industry was developing
      • all-year-round sunshine = more films could be produced
      • until 1927 all films were silent
      • 1927 = first 'talkie' made
      • 1920s: movies = multi-billion dollar business & about 100 million cinema tickets sold each week
    • CAR
      • motor car led to major changes & improvements
      • cars helped cities grow by opening suburbs
      • people travelled to/from entertainment
