- Reliability-Police can collect crime truthfully as it is based on reports.
- Validity- Police can talk to offenders to gather valid data and gather evidence
- Limitations
- Reliability-Methods of recording vary in different places
- Validity-Changes in recording crime lead to alterations in the results
- E.g. crime might look like it is decreasing or increasing but it is just a change in the recording
- Ethics-Victims might not want to speak to police due to shame or rumours

- Reliability-Survey is not sent to everyone therefore are not representative
- Validity- Results may be biased, no victimless crimes and they may lie
- PURPOSE:Allows people to see from the victims view
- Business crimes and victimless crimes are not included and relies on victims memory
