- AC1.5- Perceptions of crime trends
- explanation: by the media over-reporting a crime it will give an inaccurate depiction of crime trends to the public making them fearful of certain crimes
- stats: violent and sexual crimes make up less than 5% of crimes committed in the UK, they hold nearly 45% of media coverage of crime
- example: the media heavily report on violent crimes as they are more interesting and get more viewers but as a result it makes public think this is happening all the time when it isnt
- example: the media over report isis terrorists attacks compared to other terrorist attacks making people believe they are the worst group out there
- how did media cause this: embellish, over-report, mis represent and glorify certain crimes
