  • How accurate is it to say that the Pilgrimage of Grace (1536–37) posed a serious threat to the authority of Henry VIII?
    • LOA= it is mostly accurate to say it was a threat to his authority
      • Criteria.  = due to the fact it was a large scale rebellion- always challenges the power and authority of the monarch
    • P1 - agree
      • the rebellion had over 30,000 participants - far larger than any other
        • it also had a clear set of demands and involvement with the gentry
      • it is beacuse of these large numbers that the rebellion was a threat to henrys position on the throne
        • as it showsed that a large gourp were questioning his desicions as king and rising up
    • p2- counter argument
      • the rebellion remained loyal to henry and stayed south
      • the support from the gentry was half hearted
      • the risings across the north were not coordinated enough
      • as the rebels never intended to overthrow the king it could be argued that it was not a threat to his authority
        • however the fact that the rebels were prepared to rise up and protest was a threat to henrys authority
    • P3 - agree further
      • The ability of the pilgrims to paralyse government in the north •
      • The revealing of widespread hostility to the changes introduced in the 1530s by Henry and Cromwell
