Working memory model

?
What is the central executive?
Attentional process that monitors incoming data, makes decisions and allocates slave systems to tasks.
1 of 7
What is the phonological loop?
One of the slave systems. Deals with auditory information. Sub divided into:
- The Phonological store: which stores the words you hear
- The articulatory process: which allows maintenance rehearsal (repeating sounds or words in a 'loop' to keep them in t

What is the visuo-spatial sketchpad?
The visuo-spatial sketchpad is another slave system and stores visual and/or spatial information when required. Sub divided into:
- Visual cache: stores visual data
- Inner scribe: records the arrangement of objects in the visual field.

What is the episodic buffer?
Another slave system. Is a temporary store for information, integrating the visual, spatial and verbal information into a single memory rather than separate strands. Records events (like episodes.)

Name an evaluation point for WMM.
Strength - Clinical evidence.
KF had poor STM for verbal information but could process visual information normally (digits).
So his phonological loop had been damaged

Name an evaluation point for WMM.
Strength - Research support. Dual task performance.
Baddeley found that participants had a harder time doing two visual tasks than doing a visual and verbal task at the same time. Both visual tasks compete for the same resources but a visual and verbal th
