Describe the history of Vietnam before the war
Used to be known as Indochina and was ruled by France. Japan took control of its main resources during WW2. There was a strong anti-Japanese movement called the Viet Minh (its leader was Ho Chi Minh.

An independent Vietnam was formed in 1945 but the French wanted it back so it resulted in a war. By 1949 communists had taken over China. The US feared that there was a communist plan by China to dominate all of east Asia.

US forces fired on a Vietnamese boat which came to close. The sailors thought that they were under attack again so Congress voted to escalate US involvement in Vietnam.
