waves and sound: definitions

?
what is a longitudinal wave? give examples
a longitudinal wave is a wave in which the particles vibrate parallel to the direction of the travel of the wave. examples: sound waves
1 of 6
what is the time period of a wave?
the time period, T, of a wave is the time taken for one complete wave to pass
2 of 6
what is the frequency of a wave? what is its units?
the frequency, F, of a wave is the number of complete wave past a point in one second. The unit for frequency is called hertz (Hz)
3 of 6
what is the wavelength of a wave?
this is the distance between to consecutive crests (transverse) or two consecutive compressions (longitudinal). The units for a wavelength is meters and we use the symbol lambda to represent wavelengths
4 of 6
what is the amplitude of a wave? what is it measured in?
this is the distance of maximum displacement from the mid-point of a wave. amplitude is measured in meters
5 of 6
what is a transverse wave? give examples
a longitudinal wave is a wave in which the particles vibrate perpendicular to the direction of the travel of the wave. examples: electromagnetic wave
