What are the three types of subatomic particles?
Protons, neutrons and electrons
1 of 8
What are their charges?
Protons- positive, Neutrons- neutral ,Electrons-negative
2 of 8
What is an element?
A single, simple substance which cannot be broken down into anything simpler. It contains only one type of atom.
3 of 8
What is the mass number?
Protons plus elcetrons
4 of 8
Describe the structure of an atom
Protons and neutrons in the nucleus with electrons orbiting in shells. The overall charge of an atom is neutral as the protons and electrons cancel each other out.
5 of 8
What is the electron structure?
Electrons are arranged in shells or orbits. Each shell contains electrons with different amounts of energy. The less energy the electron has the closest it is to the nucleus.
6 of 8
How are shells filled?
The first shell is filled first as it is closest to the nucleus and can hold a maximum of 2 electrons. The following shells can hold up to 8 electrons as the energy of the electrons increases, further away from the nucleus.
7 of 8
What is special about group 0 in the periodic table?
Group 0 are the noble gases as those elements all have full outer shells so are stable and do not react.
