What are Eukaryotic cells?
They are found in plants, animals, fungi and protists. They are 10-100 micrometres in size.
1 of 21
What are Prokaryotic cells?
They are found in bacteria and about 0.1-5.0 micrometres in size.
2 of 21
What is the name of the small ring of DNA that some Prokaryotic cells have?
Plasmid.
Plasmids replicate and move between cells so that genetic information can be shared.
3 of 21
What do Prokaryotic cells have instead of a nucleus?
They have a single loop of DNA in the cytoplasm where most of their genetic information is stored.
4 of 21
What do Prokaryotic cells NOT have?
Mitochondria
Chloroplasts
Nucleus
5 of 21
What structures are found in ALL Eukaryotic cells?
Cell membrane
Cytoplasm
Nucleus
6 of 21
What are sub-cellular structures?
The things found in cells.
7 of 21
What's the cell membrane and what's its
function?
It separates the interior of the cell from the environment outside. It is selectively impermeable which means it has no control of what enters or exits the cell.
8 of 21
What is the nucleus and what's its function?
It's the control centre of the cell and contains chromosomes which contain the cell's genetic information.
9 of 21
What is the function of ribosomes?
They synthesise proteins.
10 of 21
What is the mitochondria and it's function?
It is the organelles where aerobic respiration occurs. This means that it produces energy that our cells need to function.
11 of 21
What is the cytoplasm and it's function?
It is a jelly-like fluid that fills the cell where most of the cells chemical reactions take place.
12 of 21
Although plant cells have the same sub-cellular structures that animal cells have, what other 3 structures do they have?
Permanent Vacuole
Chloroplasts
Cell Wall
13 of 21
What is the vacuole and it's function?
A fluid-filled sac that contains water and is enclosed inside the membrane.
14 of 21
What are chloroplasts and what is their function?
They contain a pigment called chlorophyll which is needed for photosynthesis.
15 of 21
What is the cell wall and it's function?
It is made of cellulose and surrounds the cell increasing the structural strength of it.
16 of 21
Why do plant cells differentiate?
So they can make new tissues.
17 of 21
Why do animal cells differentiate?
So they can repair cells and repair tissues.
18 of 21
What type of cell is a bacterial cell?
Prokaryotic
19 of 21
What 5 sub-cellular structures do bacterial cells have?
Cell Wall
Cell Membrane
Cytoplasm
Plasmid
Flagella
20 of 21
What's a flagella?
A whip-like structure used for movement.
