Transport in Plants

?
What are the 3 important parts of plant cells involved with osmosis
Cell walls are fully permeable to all molecules. Cytoplasm pushes against the cell wall. Causes the plant cell to develop high internal pressures in the right conditions
1 of 16
Osmosis in plants
Cytoplasm is fluid and contains orgnaelles. Surrounded by the plasma membrane. Vacoule contains watery cell sap. Separated from the cytoplasm by a partially-permeable membrane
2 of 16
Different types of solutions
Hypertonic=More solute concentration. Hypotonic=less Isotonic=same
3 of 16
Describe turgor pressure
Internal cellular pressure
4 of 16
Describe Turgid
Vacoule swells and pushes the cytoplasm which pushes the cell wall. The cell wall doesn't stretch and internal pressure increases. When the pressure is high enough to stop any water entering and water potential is equal.
5 of 16
Describe Flaccid
Water potential inside the vacoule and outside the cell is the same. No net movement of water. Turgor pressure is low but not extreme.
6 of 16
Describe Plasmolysis
Water leaves vacoule and it reduces in size and doesn't push against the cytoplasm. Cell membrane pulls aways from the cell wall. No internal pressure
7 of 16
What are root hairs
Main site of water absoroètion by the roots with a greater surface area
8 of 16
Describe how the roots can uptake water
Soil water has a higher water potential so OS moves it. It goes into the root cortex. and goes up the xylem
9 of 16
What is meant by transpiration
Loss of water vapourr from the leaves
10 of 16
Name 3 purposes of the transpiration stream
1. Supplies water for the leaf cells to carry out photosynthesis
2. Carries dissolved mineral ions
3. Provides water to keep the plant cells turgid
11 of 16
What affects the rate of transpiration
Temperature, Wind speed, Humidity, and Light intensity
12 of 16
Describe the practical for light intensity for transpiration
Use a lamp to increase the intensity to increase. Put in a cupboard to decrease
13 of 16
Describe the practical for Temperature for transpiration
cold or hot room
14 of 16
Describe the practical for humidity for transpiration
spray water in a clear bag befpre sealing it around the plant.
15 of 16
Describe the practical wind speed for transpiration
Use a fan
