What is the function of stomata?
To regulate water loss and allow gas exchange.

Lower epidermis, direct sunlight increases water evaporation.

What is the difference in concentration of gases during day and night?
Gas concentration isnt affected as respiration doesnt depend on light--therefore continuous. However there is a higher concentration of CO2 during the day as photosynthesis only happens when there is light.

What does hydrogencarbonate show?
It is used to show the concentration of CO2. It is naturally orange, and when CO2 is added, it turns yellow. If CO2 is removed, then it turns purple.

Explain water transport in flowering plants.
Water enters through the roots by osmosis. Root hair cells absorb the water and nutrients from the ground. Roots have lots of tiny, thin and long projections, which increase surface area so more water and minerals are absorbed.

Water enters the cortex of the root then travels into the xylem vessels, where it is then transported around the plant.

Describe the features of the xylem vessels.
One way only. Transports water and minerals. No end walls between cells. Thick walls stiffened with lignin.

Describe the features of the phloem vessels.
Two way flows. Transports water and food--sucrose and amino acids. Cells have perforated end walls.
