What do chromosomes contain?
Genetic information (DNA).
1 of 14
What is the necleus made out of?
Chromosomes containing genetic information.
2 of 14
What do the different genes control?
The development of different charateristics.
3 of 14
How many copies of each chromosome do body cells normally have?
Two copies-one from the organism's "father" and one from the organism's "mother".
4 of 14
How many pairs of chromosomes are in a human cell?
23.
5 of 14
What does the cell cycle make new cells for?
Growth, development and repair.
6 of 14
What is the stage of the cell cycle when the cell divides called?
Mitosis.
7 of 14
What do body cells in multicellular organisms do to produce new cells as part of a series of stages called the cell cycle?
They divide.
8 of 14
What do multicellular organisms use to grow or replace cells that have been damaged?
They use mitosis.
9 of 14
What is the result at the end of the cell cycle?
Two new identical cells to the original cell, with the same number of chromosomes
10 of 14
When is the DNA of a cell spread out in long strings?
When the cell isn't dividing.
11 of 14
What does the cell have to grow and increase the amount of before it divides?
Subcellular structures such as mitochondria and ribosomes.
12 of 14
After the amount of subcellular structures has grown and increased what then happens in order for the cell to divide?
It duplicates it's DNA -so there is one copy for each new cell. The DNA is copied and creates x-shaped chromosomes. One side of the chromosome is an exact copy of the other.
13 of 14
Once the growth and DNA replication of a cell has taken place, the cell is ready for mitosis. What happens in the first stages of mitosis?
The chromosomes line up and cell fibres pull them apart. Two arms of each chromosome go to opposite ends of the cell. Membranes form around each of the sets of chromosomes, which then become the neuclei. Lasty, the cytoplasm and cell membrane divide.
